Project Details
GRK 1071: Viruses of the Immune System
Subject Area
Microbiology, Virology and Immunology
Term
from 2005 to 2013
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 440477
The Research Training Group aims at the cooperation in the graduate student training between faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Harvard Medical School; it is based on successful cooperations that have been well established for numerous years. Graduate training is available for students of molecular medicine, medicine and biology. The programme is part of the major research focus in Infectiology and Immunology of the Medical Faculty in Erlangen and is related to the Collaborative Research Centre 466 Lymphoproliferation and Viral Immunodeficiency . Research topics include the basis of AIDS pathogenesis and viral oncogenesis as well as therapy and prophylaxis of herpesvirus and retrovirus infections. The programme is divided in three subdivisions:
-- Viral Immunodeficiency with projects on the molecular mechanisms of retrovirus replication
-- The Basis of Prevention and Therapy , studying new viral target structures
-- Lymphotropic Tumour Viruses with molecular oncology of herpesviruses and retroviruses
The key feature of the tuitional programme is
(1.) the exchange between the fourteen fellows at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and the six graduate students at Harvard Medical School. All graduate students will convene twice a year for retreats of three days, together with their mentors, alternating between Germany and New England. In addition, the tuitional programme for the graduate students in Erlangen includes
(2.) a Journal Club meeting per week, coordinated by the graduate students,
(3.) regular oral reports by the associated members,
(4.) discussion rounds with guest professors,
(5.) courses in lecturing and publication competence,
(6.) a trainee programme and
(7.) an annual international meeting organised together with the Collaborative Research Centre 466. The graduate students have been selected after national and international advertising by the Executive Board of the Training Grant for promotion in Erlangen; the external graduates are students of Molecular Medicine or Biology from Erlangen who conduct all scientific work in Harvard Medical School and will pass the graduation exam at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.
