In the first two phases of BEF-China, the Central project Z1 has realized the establishment of the Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) and of the Main Experiment. Beside managing the general administration and coordination, the Z1 project has organized the replanting, labelling of all trees with metal tags, the travel and accommodation of all members of the Research Unit, the establishment of the field labs in Xingangshan. Z1 run the three climate stations and provide climate data for the Ecoscape approach. In addition, Z1 prepared press releases, planned two full all assemblies with all European and Chinese members, two European PI meetings, two workshops exclusively for female postdocs and PIs, two NILEx workshops, one statistics course and two summer schools, supported the establishment of the NILEx, repeated the remote sensing using drone-based aerial photographs and conducted a full ground census of all trees. In addition, Z1 maintained and extended the geographical information system (GIS) of the experimental sites, and thus, thus provided upto date tree and shrub positions for all measurements of all SPs. Finally, Z1 took the lead in synthesis work on the design of the experiment and the Pilot Experiment. In the third phase of the Research Unit, the Central project Z1 will continue with these management tasks. A new task will be the establishment, management and evaluation of a new experiment on modifying the Biodiversity-Ecosystem Functioning relationship (BEFmod) and the establishment of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in the field lab in Xingangshan.
