In 1817 the romantic writer, art theorist and journalist Stephan Schütze (1771-1839) published a comic theory under the title Versuch einer Theorie des Komischen, which presents new and far-reaching opportunities for the cultural, literary and aesthetical inquiry of Romanticism and Realism. The aim of our project is the rediscovery of Schütze's writings. For this purpose we are planning an edition of Versuch einer Theorie des Komischen and of three minor comic-theoretical writings ("Ueber das Komische", 1810; "Ueber das Verhältnis des Lächerlichen und des Komischen", 1834; Review to F.T. Vischers "Ueber das Erhabene und Komische", 1838). Besides Schütze's texts, the edition will contain a detailed introduction, a commentary and a register. Thus we locate Schütze's comic theory in the cultural and discoursive contexts of the first half of the 19th century. The Meiner Verlag has agreed to publish the edition in the prestigious Philosophische Bibliothek.
