High Performance Computer
Term
Funded in 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 437696620
The planed high-performance computer will replace the current bwForCluster MLS&WISO at the University of Heidelberg and Mannheim and represents the Tier-3 HPC system of the state of Baden-Württemberg for research in the following disciplines: Structural and Systems Biology, Medical Science, Soft Matter and Computational Humanities.Research in these disciplines often involves the generation and/or analysis of comparatively large amounts of data. This is taken into account in the technical and organizational concept of the new high-performance computer, so that the system addresses both the massive demand for HPC use in the sense of capacity computing and the requirements of data processing in the sense of data-intensive computing.By connecting the high-performance computer with the online data storage systems of the Large Scale Data Facility 2, researchers in the corresponding discipline will gain substantial added value, as data storage, data management and computing capacity are addressed in coordinated manner. The high-performance computer applied for is integrated into the concept of the universities of Baden-Württemberg for High Performance Computing, Data Intensive Computing and Large Scale Scientific Data Management.
