Defect phases in grain boundaries and precipitates of Ni-Cu-Nb solid solutions and Nb7(Ni,Al/Cu)6 intermetallic phases are identified by atomic probe tomography. Furthermore, the controlled synthesis of defect phases is realised by means of a unique in vacuo experimental setup using oxygen and nitrogen plasmas in the preparation of atom probe samples. Correlative structural and chemical analysis by transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography will be used for holistic characterisation of defect phases.
