Discharges at DC voltage with superimposed medium frequency voltage at dielectric interfaces in high-voltage-insulation-systems

Subject Area Electrical Energy Systems, Power Management, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives
Term from 2020 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 437255495

Due to increasing use of renewable energy sources and new technological possibilities decentral structures will characterize the future electrical energy grid. To ensure the energy transport and to increase the efficiency HVDC electric power grids are used. The coupling between decentral sources, loads and different voltage levels can be realized by power electronic systems with an operating sinusoidal or rectangular medium frequency voltage. This leads to superposition of the grid voltage (DC voltage) and medium frequency voltages. The aim of the project is to study the characteristics of surface discharges at dielectric interfaces at composite voltages. Therefore experimental basic investigations at test setups with a test voltage (subordinated DC voltage and superimposed medium frequency voltage) for emulation of the real stresses will be realized. High-quality polymers in gaseous mediums are used. The effects of surface discharges at these dielectric interfaces are studied by electrical, chemical-physical and optical investigation methods.
