Project Details
Multi collector ICP mass spectrometer
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
Funded in 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 437101389
Freie Universität Berlin is applying funds to acquire a multi collector ICP-MS. The instrument will be operated by the Geochemistry Group (Institut für Geologische Wissenschaften) in new laboratory facilities (under construction). The new instrument will allow to apply new methods for the study of geological materials that cannot be used with the existing mass spectrometers. The initial focus will be on the precise and accurate measurement of the differences in stable isotope abundances of elements such as zinc, potassium, lithium and sulfur in geological samples related to problems in high- and low.temperature geochemistry and cosmochemistry. We will also use the instrument to apply the lutetium-hafnium decay system for geochronological and tracer purposes in rocks. The new instrument will be used in scientific projects and collaborations in the next funding phase of the CRC-TRR 170 (Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets), and will be used in projects with other groups in the Institut für Geologische Wissenschaften.
