Project Details
Comparative morphologies, ejecta plains, and ages of impact basins on the Moon and Mercury (A06)
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
since 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 263649064
We will carry out a comparative study to identify, characterize, and date basins (>300 km) and large craters on the Moon and Mercury. We will study the crater production functions on ejecta blankets of the basins, which may reveal similarities and differences of the cratering process and specifically, whether the cratering process remained constant over time within the inner Solar System. In particular, the statistics of craters on the so-called "light plains" on both planets may help us to further constrain the sequence and ages of basin-forming Events.
