Biomedical clinical and basic research is increasingly concentrating on the exact molecular and functional characterization of individual cells or cell groups within complex biological systems and organs, both internationally and as in biomedical research in Kiel. In Kiel, the main focus is on inflammatory medicine and precision medicine. Kiel also has outstanding expertise in the field of sequencing and various -omics technologies. The application of these technologies to the molecular analysis of defined (single) cells or groups is to be optimized and intensified by sorting the cell types to be investigated. Especially in the immune system and within complex tissue samples (patients) this is a challenge and necessity which can be ideally addressed by modern flow cytometric methods. This requires technical equipment that allows high-resolution analysis of single cell within cell mixtures using a maximum number of parameters and simultaneously purifying defined cell populations or individual cells for subsequent functional or molecular analysis steps. No adequate equipment is currently available in Kiel (a 14-year-old, technically limited device is no longer maintained by the manufacturer and must be replaced). In order to meet the variable requirements at the Kiel site, the purchase of a multi-colour cell sorter with 4 lasers, up to 16 colour parameters and single cell deflection is essential. Multidimensional cell sorting and analysis procedures require high instrumental and personnel costs as well as specialized and constantly updated know-how. Therefore, the device is to be integrated into a newly created cytometry core facility at the Institute of Immunology.
