Subproject 2 investigates the manufacturing of functional, coarse grained, refractory composites bases on the pre-synthesized grains of subproject 1. Samples will be generated via vibration assisted casting, pressure slip casting and cold isostatic pressing with the aid of a wide grain size distribution between 1 and 5000 µm. The rheology and the flowing of the castables as well as of the pressing masses will be a function of grain size, grain size distribution, grain shape, specific surface of the grains as well their ability to get deformed at room temperature. Based on the adjustment of specific grain size distributions the impact of fine and coarse grains on the mechanical, thermomechanical, chemical and electrical properties will be investigated in cooperation also with the other subprojects of the scientific group.Core/Shell-Sandwich components based on alumina on the outer side and metal/ceramic composite as a core material will be studied. With the aid of the coarse grains a shrinkage less than 1% during the sintering process will be aimed, so that a micro crack free interface between the core and the cell will be generated. For core/shell-components a) silica- and alkali-free hybrid heating shields will be investigated for energy applications as well as b) carbon free hybrid stoppers for metallurgical application in the steel industry will be explored. Flame sprayed coatings will improve the oxidation resistance of the metal/ceramic composite core material.
