Evaluation of the competitive potential of production technologies

Subject Area Production Systems, Operations Management, Quality Management and Factory Planning
Term from 2019 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 431696521

In order to be able to remain successful in global competition, manufacturing companies have to utilize their available production technology in an effective and efficient way. Due to their evolutionary development, the range of existent technologies in present and future is evolving continuously. Furthermore, strategic technology decisions are trend-setting for the market position of manufacturing companies. Consequently, technology decisions need to be made on a structured and substantiated basis. Past research activities focused on the evaluation of technology readiness, which represents the status-quo of a technology, or consider only particular aspects of the technology potential. To establish and harness strategic competitive advantages the holistic consideration of future technology potentials is necessary. Therefore, an approach for an integrational potential evaluation will be developed using a quantitative data approach under consideration of uncertainties. Firstly a catalogue of relevant and clustered influencing factors on the technology potential will be presented. In order to model the factors appropriately, suitable modelling methods will be identified, classified and a selection procedure will be introduced. Based on the clustered influencing factors and the identified modelling methods, component models which are then aggregated to a comprehensive technology potential model will be derived.
