Electron-ion recombination at magnetic storage rings is a well established field of research. Nevertheless, magnetic storage rings have the inherent limitation, that only ions with comparatively low mass-to-charge ratios can be stored for sufficiently long times such that meaningful recombination experiments can be carried out. The situation is fundamentally different at electrostatic storage rings which are capable of storing ions independent of their mass. Here, it is proposed to make use of this capability for novel electron-ion recombination studies with atomic ions (Fe+, Xe+) and with fullerene (C60) ions at the electrostatic cryogenic storage ring CSR of the Heidelberg Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics. In particular, we will investigate in how far electron-ion recombination of many electron-systems proceeds via collective excitations of bound electrons.
