Microbial-derived histamine induces resolution of synovial inflammation via the CNS (B07)

Subject Area Immunology
Term from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 261193037

Project B07 is interested in a better mechanistic understanding of the complex interplay between microbial-derived histamine in the gut and how it promotes the resolution of synovial inflammation. Data from the second funding period revealed that the short-chain fatty acid propionate has strong immunoregulatory properties on myeloid progenitor cells, but interestingly also promotes bacterial histamine secretion. New preliminary data suggest a central involvement of microbial-derived histamine and the histamine receptor 3 (H3R) in the CNS to trigger rapid and immediate resolution of synovial inflammation. Hence, this project will address the pro-resolving role of histamine on arthritis via H3R-mediated neuronal activation.
