The aim of this project is to investigate the mechanisms by which microglia promote recovery after acute stroke. We will adopt novel tools to modulate microglial function and study their impact on functional recovery and long-range neuronal connectivity. Specifically, we will focus on the role of microglia in modulating axon integrity and myelination during axonal reorganization and the ApoE-pathway of chronic microglial activation. For this we will combine complementary tools of in vivo imaging, genetic modification and ultrastructural analysis.
