The head of the group is a leading researcher of topological insulators and topological superconductors, and he is the spokesperson of the new cluster of excellence “Matter and Light for Quantum Computing (ML4Q)”. An important part of the research of the group concerns thin-film growths and device fabrications. One of the main objectives of the group and of ML4Q is to utilize Majorana fermions, which are the exotic quasiparticles expected to appear in topological superconductors, for quantum computation. The molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system is an important tool for growing high-quality thin films to realize the platforms to harbor Majorana fermions. To perform the ambitious research plan for which the group is responsible in the context of ML4Q, a dedicated, high-performance MBE machine is necessary for producing the thin film samples used for the Majorana device fabrications.
