The clinical research unit (CRU) was started in 2020 with the aim of bringing together clinical studies (A1 and A2) and basic scientific research projects (B1-B6) to better understand the mechanisms of food allergy and tolerance and to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of food allergy.Despite the restrictions caused by the pandemic, a significant proportion of the patients could be recruited for the clinical projects. The delays in recruitment were also used to optimally build up the structures and procedures of the CRU. This includes the organization of the collection of biosamples, the electronic recording of data from clinical studies and the establishment of data management. In addition, the CRU was structurally built up with regular internal and external meetings, as well as the establishment of clinical and bioinformatic working groups. The results of all sub-projects were brought together in a first publication (healthy versus food allergic individuals). In the second funding period, the infrastructural activities of the CRU will be continued and expanded. This primarily includes the integration of the extension studies, but also the new cohorts from A1 and A2 into the existing computational systems and the transfer of the data and results to the C2 project, where a higher-level analysis and data integration takes place using new computer-aided analytical methods and artificial intelligence in order to develop new concepts for the the innovative management of food allergy in children and adults.
