Two Modes of Vigilance, Two Logics of Prohibition: Spiritual and Social Vigilance of Bektaşî Sufis after the Bans of 1826 and 1925 (B05)
Subject Area
Islamic Studies, Arabian Studies, Semitic Studies
Term
since 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 394775490
The project investigates the double, spiritual and social vigilance of Bektaşî Sufis throughout the Ottoman and post-Ottoman eras. It carries the vigilance issues studied during the first phase of the project onto conditions of prohibition and persecution which arose when the Bektaşî Order was been banned in 1826. The primary focus is on coping strategies: at the spiritual level with regard to self-vigilance and adaptation of one’s behaviour both to doctrine and in practice; and, at the social level, on implicit negotiations with both state and leading authority figures in society by means of image control, publishing activities, and by association with the Alevi community.
