HPC-Cluster for scientific computing

With this application, in which nine research areas from four departments of the University of Wuppertal and the Center for Information and Media (ZIM) participate as technical partners, a joint computing and data center is to be installed at the University of Wuppertal for the numerical solution of various scientific questions. The applicant working groups are located in the Interdisciplinary Center for AppliedComputer Science and Scientic Computing (IZ 2) of the University of Wuppertal.Currently the IZ2 operates a smaller scale computing center mainly for the particle physics and electrical engineering groups. This application aims at an extension towards a broader scientific coverage. In detail, these are the following research areas:1. experimental elementary particle physics,2. astroparticle and hadron physics,3. fluid mechanics,4. Computational Electromagnetics,5. applied mathematics and numerical analysis,6. high-performance computing and software technology7. Stochastics8. optimization of mechanical structures9. computer-aided modelling and reliability engineering in product development.The working groups are integrated into large research networks, some of which are international. They are very successful in attracting third-party funding and have a long tradition in scientific computing and the operation of larger computer infrastructures.The current research activities of the participating working groups require considerable computing resources. Flexible locally available resources play an important role in this context, in order to be internationally successful. The system we apply for, takes these needs of the individual groups into account. Furthermore, the installation of the system also enables other scientific working groups at the University of Wuppertal an easy start to utilize powerful computer systems.
