Project Details
Canonization and Diversification in Islamic Law and in Arabian Rhetoric from a comparative perspective (B03)
Subject Area
Islamic Studies, Arabian Studies, Semitic Studies
Term
from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 403589434
The project compares processes of diversification in knowledge production that took place in Islamic law (fiqh) and Arabic rhetoric (balāgha) in the “post-canonical” age. While the 14th century saw the articulation of a canonized standard doctrine in these disciplines, it also saw new genres and textual forms that emerged in addition to the canonical texts, facilitating the articulation of diverse doctrinal positions. The project continues to investigate the functional interrelation of these multiple genres, with a shift of focus onto the Ottoman era (16th to 18th centuries).
