Homopolyatomic cations of the non-metals stabilized by weakly coordinating boron cluster anions

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term since 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424560420

Unusual structures and bonding situations characterize the homopolyatomic cations of the non-metals, which are of fundamental importance to the chemistry of these elements. While classical syntheses to those cations have been studied exhaustively, modern concepts and methods represent promising new access paths. In this project the homopolyatomic cations of the elements of group 16 (sulfur, selenium, tellurium) will be investigated. Furthermore, these methods will be transferred to selected elements of groups 15 (phosphorus, arsenic, antimony) and 17 (bromine). In condensed phase the cations will be stabilized by halogenated weakly coordinating boron cluster-based anions. It is expected that these large and weakly coordinating anions also stabilize radical cations, besides dications, of the non-metal elements. The synthetic studies will be accompanied by EPR-spectroscopic, electrochemical, and quantum-chemical investigations.
