Relaxation dynamics following a quench in integrable and almost integrable quantum chains

Subject Area Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 267822229

Understanding the dynamics of many-body quantum systems is an important goal in fundamental condensed matter research and sets the foundations for the development of novel quantum technologies. A special class of many-body quantum systems are so-called integrable models where many properties can be studied analytically. The obtained results are important benchmarks for numerical and approximate methods. Integrable models can, furthermore, be realized - up to small perturbations - in cold atomic gases allowing for a direct experimental test. This project will enhance our knowledge about non-equilibrium dynamics in integrable models by studying so-called quantum quenches using both analytical and numerical techniques. One of the main goals is a better understanding of the relaxation dynamics at long times towards the equilibrium state which is described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble.
