Project Details
Strain tuning of frustrated magnets (C09)
Subject Area
Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term
since 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 247310070
This project is devoted to tuning frustrated magnets by uniaxial pressure. Owing to its directionality, uniaxial pressure provides a powerful means to manipulate the delicate balance of interactions in frustrated magnets via controlled changes of the lattice symmetry. During the last funding period, novel tools to probe frustrated magnets under uniaxial pressure were successfully implemented, including thermodynamic measurements of the elastocaloric effect and Young’s modulus as well as structure determination using x-ray diffraction. With this unique tool set at hand, the project now aims to explore and understand the impact of uniaxial pressure on ground states of frustrated Mott insulators, their excitations, phase transitions, and critical properties.
