For almost 120 years, the Institute for Machine Tools (IfW) of the University of Stuttgart has been researching and teaching in the fields of the design, the simulation and the optimization of machine tools, assemblies, power tools and tools as well as their experimental analyses. The research and development projects of the IfW for optimizing tools and processes of machining operations are not only carried out for metallic materials and their alloys but also for wood or wood-based products, plastics, composites as well as hybrid materials.Apart from the simulated design of machine tools, tools and machining processes, the institute also lays great emphasis on their experimental analyses. It is essential here to measure not only the surfaces and geometries of the examined cutting tools in the macroscopic and microscopic ranges but also of the workpieces out of various materials machined with these tools. For this purpose, the 3D surface measuring system applied for here facilitates the following measuring methods: profile roughness measurement, area/volume measurement, form and positional tolerances, surface geometries, burr measurement as well as special edge measurements for varying tool sizes and types.
