Multiscale Modeling, Simulation and Optimization of Cutting Tools Regarding their Tribological Behavior (C06*)

Subject Area Applied Mechanics, Statics and Dynamics
Term from 2018 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 77309832

The wear process of cutting tools of tunnel boring machines is modeled across the scales from the microstructure to the macroscopic tool components. At the microscale, simulation models are developed based on discretized representative microstructures. At the macroscale, phenomenological models for the description of wear are developed to simulate the tool components. The numerical models developed here are validated based on the experimental results obtained in Subproject C5 and applied to identify improved cutting tool concepts using numerical optimization strategies.
