Project A02 studies cobalt-based spinel and perovskite films including Fe, Mn, and V dopants/substituents by scanning electrochemical cell microscopy to correlate the OER activity and ethylene glycol oxidation with the composition and surface structure. The particle-on-the-nanoelectrode approach is used to study the intrinsic activity of metal-doped spinel and perovskite nanoparticles with defined morphology and to identify structural changes at the catalyst surface upon applications of potentials below the onset of the OER. This approach is extended to other substrates such as cinnamyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, cyclohexene, and solvents including water, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide. Finally, a continuously operated electrochemical flow-through reactor with temperature control and operated with organic electrolytes will be designed.
