This project aims to develop and examine realistic theoretical models in three dimensions based on topological phases of quantum matter for fault-tolerant, self-correcting topologically protected quantum memories. We want to investigate the physics, robustness and quantum phase transitions of three-dimensional so-called fracton topological phases and systematically search for models in closer contact with potential experiments. Technically, we plan to use variational approaches as well as linked-cluster expansions to understand the breakdown of fracton topological order under external perturbations.
