Subject Area

One of the most important parameters determining gas discharge plasmas is the reduced electric field E/N. The electric field controls the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) and, consequently, the pathways of electron energy losses, which have strong influence on the active species yield of the discharge. Thus, measurements of E/N in the discharge are a subject of prime interest in the study of gas discharges. Picosecond Electric-Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (E-FISH) is used as an experimental means to measure model-independent the electric field in atmospheric pressure plasmas. These measurements are supplemented by sub-ns resolved optical emission measurements and electrical measurements of the current and voltage of the discharge.
