The central aim of the research is the development of a model describing the fiber length degradation during injection molding of short and long glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene materials. The modeling should contribute to the identification of process settings with minimal fiber length reduction. The process-specific simulations and their systematic comparison with experimental results provide the basis to revise the modeling. By the end of the project running time, the model should be able to predict the fiber length reduction for specific screw sections and the non-return valve with high accuracy taking different machine sizes, fiber-reinforced polypropylene materials and process parameters into account. The results are further used to develop an optimized screw design with respect to minimized fiber length reduction during processing fiber-reinforced plastics.
