Over the last decade, the element boron has moved to the forefront of synthetic organic chemistry and the industries that depend on it, including the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and fine chemical industries. This progress would have been impossible without one key family of inorganic molecules: diboranes. This proposal takes aim at two less well-studied examples of diboranes: di- and tetrahalodiboranes. The chemistry of these compounds, despite their long history, is still poorly understood due to their inherent reactivity. However, the potential benefits of further work with these reactive and unpredictable complexes is vast, both to inorganic and organic chemistry.
