Experiments within the first funding period showed a considerable heterogeneity of genomes as well as functional (inflammatory) activities among a series of more than 300 enterococcal strains isolated from HSCT patients, which however were rather constant within individual patients and more aggressive in enterococci isolated from acute GvHD patients. These enterococcal strains will now be transferred in germfree animal models of acute GvHD to confirm individual pathogenicity. In addition, tissue translocation of enterococci as well as their interaction with local and systemic immune reactions (cellular and humoral) will be analyzed to further characterize their assumed pathogeneic role in GvHD.
