Particularly upon cell invasion, viruses exploit existing cellular mechanisms to transport their genomes across dynamic cellular interfaces to the site of viral replication. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) utilize a unique emerging endocytic pathway, while it remains unknown what cellular cargo normally uses this pathway. We propose to elucidate function and execution of this unique mechanism that we termed WASH-mediated endocytosis (WASH-ME) by following HPV uptake into cells.
