Digitization of research-intensive and widely used parts from the archival fonds of the Provincial Government of Potsdam at the Brandenburgische Landeshauptarchiv

In the context of that DFG funding program, we propose to digitize 2.100 microfilms from the Bundessicherungsverfilmung (national cultural heritage preservation program) with the most research-intensive and used archival sources within the fonds of the Provincial Government of Potsdam at the Brandenburgische Landeshauptarchiv. The Provincial Government of Potsdam was founded in 1809 as one of two governments in the Prussian province of Brandenburg. It was responsible for the entire internal and financial administration until 1945.The goal of the project is to enrich the index data and to provide digital access to about 5.6 million document pages for science and research through the DDB and Archivportal-D.With a total volume of approx. 2.800 linear meters, that fond is a comprehensive research source. It offers essential source material in scope and depth for diverse research topics on Brandenburg history and Prussia in the 19th and 20th century. Therefore it is one of the most requested fonds in the archive. Most series contain a whole range of accumulative case files. Their use and benefit can be highly improved through digital access. Thus, the four most commonly used series from the department of the Provincial Government of Potsdam will be digitized to improve the academic use, which are: building construction affairs, municipal affairs, settlement and housing, as well as police and political affairs. All index data are already available for online research through the Brandenburgische Landeshauptarchiv database.Furthermore, we intend the additional digitalization of selected large-format maps and charts as part of the described archival fonds. These objects where categorized as “unsuitable” for conversion into microfilm so far. That is part of the research program with the Digitalization-Lab at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Faculty of Information Sciences, funded by the Brandenburgische Landeshauptarchiv.
