In this project we will investigate numerically horizontal convection systems, where heat is supplied and removed exclusively through a single, top or bottom, surface of a fluid layer. This type of thermal convection is omnipresent in many geophysical and astrophysical systems and in engineering applications. The main aim of this project is to study in a comprehensive way the convective heat and momentum transport in horizontal convection and to advance the theory from Shishkina, Grossmann, Lohse, Geophys. Res. Lett. 43 (2016). Direct numerical simulations will be conducted in a wide range of Prandtl numbers and Rayleigh numbers. This will allow us to investigate in detail the flow structures in high-Rayleigh-number horizontal convection and to verify the theoretically predicted scaling regimes.
