Consisting of almost 6000 short biographies, and several directories to make them accessible, the encyclopaedia is a fundamental work for the biographical history of the Baltics and their German population as well as for the European history of education. The biographies are structured to align to the „Deutschbaltisches Biographisches Lexikon 1710–1960“, which was published in 1970, but in general they are of a smaller scope. The objective is the comprehensive acquisition of data regarding the students from the Baltic regions in the specified period in particular with regard to their social background, their education before matriculation, the set of criteria established to select a certain University and their chosen occupation after their studies. The comparison with the development of trends in other European regions is ensured due to the work’s highly structured conception. Its relevance has been proven by the monography published by Tering in 2008 in Estonian language, in which he undertook a first analysis of more than 800 pages of the data given by the at the time already well advanced manuscript. A German summary of the results is incorporated into the encyclopaedia. In the medium run the publication of a digital version of all the articles is in the works within the framework of the online system "BBLD - Baltisches biografisches Lexikon digital" https://bbld.de. As in order to achieve this a co-operation with the information system “Deutsche Biographie” has been brought underway, it is to be expected, that the articles will be inter-connected to several online resources in the foreseeable future.
