Final Report Abstract
Founded in 2007, the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) became established as a permanent interdisciplinary scientific institution of the University of Göttingen in 2018, operated jointly by the faculties of Biology & Psychology, Chemistry and Physics, the University Medical Center, the German Primate Center and three local Max-Planck Institutes. Irrespective of their institutional affiliation, professors and junior group leaders have examiner rights and can supervise doctoral researchers Since its inception, the GGNB and its currently 15 doctoral programs had a major impact on the scientific development of the participating institutions, the initiation of joint collaborative research alliances, recruitment of new faculty members and the integration of research institutions across institutional boundaries, creating a sense of identity among its members (faculty and doctoral researchers). The main goal of the GGNB is to promote excellence by training and supervision of doctoral researchers in the life sciences, building upon a tradition of interdisciplinary cooperation between internationally renowned scientists and taking joint responsibility for individual guidance. The GGNB is committed to support its doctoral researchers by providing the best possible training and professional development through structured support, high quality research qualification, comprehensive career services extending to early-stage postdoctoral scientists, and the promotion of scientific networks for its current and former members. The degree of collaboration reached within the GGNB is best reflected by an impressive output of joint publications between GGNB researchers. By now, the GGNB has achieved all of its main goals, including quality assurance through panelbased admission of its doctoral researchers, a comprehensive qualification program leaving the freedom of choice in a tailor-made personalized curriculum, close supervision through thesis advisory committees (three independent faculty members, supervision agreement, regular meetings and reports), as well as structured support of career development and alumni networks. The time to completion of the doctoral thesis is, on average, 3.6 years and the dropout rate is at 4%. When the GGNB became a permanent graduate center, it joined forces with the Georg-August University School of Sciences (GAUSS), the umbrella institution for all doctoral researchers in the natural sciences and mathematics. The revised GAUSS-wide doctoral degree regulations define new common standards. Most elements of the qualification program initiated by the GGNB have been merged with measures taken by other GAUSS programs. The support of early-stage researchers is now managed by a GAUSS-wide Career Service Unit for late-stage doctoral researchers and postdoctoral scientists, also promoting alumni networks.
