GSC 185: Leipzig School of Natural Sciences - Building with Molecules and Nano-objects (BuildMoNa)
Final Report Abstract
The challenge and promise of nanoscience is that traditionally diverse disciplines are transforming themselves to merge into a new type of integrated multi-science, as demanded by their common subject of interest. This rapid development urgently calls for a new generation of researchers, trained not only to survive in this post-disciplinary environment but to grasp and harness its innovative potential creatively. The educational programme that we have developed during the first funding period of the Graduate School BuildMoNa is a highly successful contribution towards meeting these challenges. It is a novel type of materials and biomaterials science study programme that emphasises the role of nanostructuring in the design of smart and adaptive multifunctional materials. Thanks to our strongly interdisciplinary research and training we have multiplied our abilities to understand, synthesise, control and manipulate our nanoscopic building blocks, thus providing a toolbox to create novel materials with unexpected properties out of them. Our bottom-up strategy has brought the universal principles of self-assembly, coarse-graining and the emergence of complex functionalities increasingly into the focus of our attention. The challenge then was to comprehend and predict the emerging multiscale properties and processes starting from the nanoscopic building blocks. Emergent phenomena influence rational design in all three focus areas of BuildMoNa: smart molecules, multifunctional scaffolds, and complex nanostructures. In the last three years, we have put even stronger emphasis on potential targets for applications by aligning the course and module programme according to three applied themes that emphasise central aims and methodological strengths of the graduate school. These themes are (i) smart and active assemblies, (ii) chemical biology and biophysics of cancer, and (iii) quantum coherent structures. Based on our experiences in the first funding period, the training modules have been restructured and optimised accordingly, and are now organised in a transparent three-stage course programme. The main training modules are accompanied by introductory modules that bridge interdisciplinary gaps. Three advanced modules and mini-symposia link directly with on-going research and technological applications. The Graduate School BuildMoNa bundles the most prolific research activities in the natural science division of Universität Leipzig together with close ties to other prominent scientific institutions in Leipzig. With its highly interdisciplinary, technologically oriented international research and qualification programme, its strong embedding into regional and global innovative industries, and its commitment to scientific excellence, the Graduate School BuildMoNa is firmly established as a cornerstone of the scientific and educational development plan of Universität Leipzig.
