The goal of this research project is a fractionation with help of aerodynamic lenses, in order to attain a separation on the basis of size as well as material density. A differential aerodynamic lens will be developed to this end, which allows a relative monodisperse classification using a particle-free central sheath gas flow on the basis of the aerodynamic behavior of the particles expressed as particle relaxation time. The main principle is the classification at different pressures, which leads to a change in the pressure-dependent slip correction coefficient. This results in a shift of the relaxation time of identical sized particles, allowing to differentiate between size and material density. The targeted size range is 0,5 to 5 µm. The efficiency of the size-and material-based classification will be assessed with help of online aerosol measurement technology as well as offline elemental analysis.
