Main topic of the project extension proposal for the second SPP term is the multidimensional and multiparametric fractionation and classification of particulate systems from aerosols specifically in a size range below 10 µm. A specific separation method will be developed that separates different particle characteristics like size, shape and material properties within a single step process. The scientific approach also addresses separation characteristics for instance as density and electrical mobility of particles.The fractionation process is based on the simultaneous application of acoustic and electric fields and resulting forces in aerosols. Within the electric field the particles are separated with respect to their electric chargeability and the aerodynamic size resp. diameter. In the acoustic field (standing waves) forces are utilized that act on particle mass and aerodynamic size as well as shape and density. Due to the overlap of different fractionation characteristics in electric and acoustic fields, the fractionation process aims to separate with respect to two individual particle characteristics.In the second SPP term the numerical simulation models will be further developed and used to study different process configurations and process conditions in order to enhance the separation efficiency and selectivity. For analysis of practical relevant particle loadings in the gasstream particle agglomeration kernels need to be included in the modeling. Particulate systems of industrial relevance will be included in the project work.
