GRK 1056:  Diffusion in Porous Materials

Subject Area Chemical Solid State and Surface Research
Term from 2004 to 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 378603

Diffusion, i.e. the irregular movement of particles induced by their thermal energy, is one of the fundamental phenomena in nature. It occurs in all states of matter. Involving aspects of theoretical description, experimental observation and technical application, it is a subject of really interdisciplinary relevance. In porous materials, diffusion is one of the decisive processes, which may control the rate of their practical use.
The activities of this International Research Training Group, which bring together the expertise of world leading scientists from the Netherlands Institute for Catalysis Research (NIOK) and the Leipzig University, concentrate on three focal subjects, being presently the probably "hottest" topics in this field:
-- intracrystalline zeolitic diffusion
-- diffusion-controlled catalysis
-- diffusion-transport correlation in porous media
The complementary specialisation of the involved groups guarantees a comprehensive education programme and provides best conditions for exploring the synergism of collaboration. The consortium will substantially benefit from the teaching experience with the well-established Dutch PhD training programmes, in particular in the courses on "Computational Molecular Modelling" (organised through NIOK), and on "Mass Transfer and on Adsorption" (organised through OSPT). The Leipzig groups contribute to the consortium with their research and teaching expertise from the Research Training Groups "Physical Chemistry of Interfaces" and "Quantum Field Theory", and from the Collaborative Research Centre "Molecules in Interaction with Interfaces".
