Acoustic investigation of a hollow chamber in turbulent flow

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics
Acoustics
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 378373148

Hollow chambers in turbulent flow have frequently been surveyed for industrial use. Often various configurations are tested in expensive experimental runs in order to fulfil design objectives (e.g., noise reduction). So far there is a lack of understanding of the basic interactions between turbulence and acoustics. We are not aware of any model which takes into account a realistic geometry (finite thickness of the boundary layer) and non-linearity (e.g., resonances of boundary layer and chamber). Nevertheless, the influence of these quantities is known. The aim of this nine-month project is to compare existing acoustic reference-models with the results of an already conducted 'Direct Numerical Simulation'. The pros and cons of these reference-models will be pointed out. Finally, we are striving to combine / enhance the reference-models. The newly combined / enhanced model allows a more general prediction of the acoustic properties of a hollow chamber in turbulent flow and saves resources of the design process.
