Cancer-associated cachexia negatively affects quality of life, efficacy of tumor treatment and survival of cancer patients. Given this unmet clinical need, the multidisciplinary team of project A9 aims to improve cancer cachexia monitoring and risk stratification by quantitative imaging, including multi-parametric MRI and 18FDG-PET, thereby providing a time-resolved, tissue-compartment specific definition of cachexia. Furthermore, method development for ectopic fat imaging and the assessment of its role in wasting-associated insulin resistance will provide the rationale for designated preclinical testing of innovative insulin sensitization treatments for prevention and reversal cachexia.
