This project will examine the functional role of labilization and reconsolidation processes during sleep and wakefulness for the adaptive formation and modification of memories for the long term. Understanding how memories are formed and how they can be modified is essential not only for optimal pedagogical applications but also for the development of new treatments for disorders involving distorted or traumatic memories. In the first part of the project, we will study the neuronal and electrophysiological underpinnings of reactivation-induced labilization and reconsolidation during sleep and wakefulness, applying fMRI combined with polysomnography, as well as EEG analyses of ERPs and oscillatory activity. The second part of the project will focus on the direct manipulation of labilization and reconsolidation process in the sleep and wake state by means of pharmacological interventions, specifically targeting the GABAergic system by application of the benzodiazepine-like Zolpidem. Both parts will be run in close collaboration between the Argentinean and the German partners (focusing on the first and second part, respectively), fruitfully combining the complementary expertise of both parties.
