Final Report Abstract

The project "Ocean Mixing observed with Seismic Oceanography and Hydrographic Measurements" focused on the development and evaluation of SO as a tool to investigate oceanic mixing processes. To date the data collected in close collaboration with the EU-project GO is the only reference data set combining marine seismic data with conventional high quality hydrographic observations both collected contemporaneously from two research vessels. In addition to the main experimental phase we collected data during the deployment of an autonomous glider system in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This glider was equipped with a microstructure sonde to estimate local mixing rates in the ocean in parallel with marine seismic measurements performed by a group of Spanish, Italian, and German scientists on R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa. After proper processing of the data collected in the experimental phase of this project and GO, the data were exchanged and we participated in regular meetings of GO. The results of SO and the combined projects in particular were discussed at an ESF sponsored workshop in Begur/Spain from which a special issue in Geophysical Research Letters evolved. We • documented the similarity of isopycnal and reflector slopes, • discovered the possibility to see reflector movements in marine seismic data, • and developed a method to merge hydrographic with marine seismic data to obtain detailed images of oceanic structures . We expect that the only recently collected data in the Tyrrhenian Sea will lead to further insights and publications.
