As the four applicants are involved in different research fields the HPLC-MS will be used for different purposes. The group of A. Bechthold is involved in studying the biosynthesis of different natural products (e.g. rishirilid A, mensacarcin, WS9326A), the regulation of natural product biosynthesis and the function and specificity of selected enzymes. The group of C. Jessen-Trefzer is focusing her research on the development of novel strategies to combat Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She urgently needs the novel instrument to monitor the organic synthesis of tools for her approach and to study drug uptake in mycobacteria. The group of S. Günther is performing microbial genome mining and needs the HPLC-MS to detect predicted natural product peak pattern. In addition, the group plans to develop a host strain for the formation of large amounts of terpenoids and this project also requires an HPLC-MS. Finally the group of O. Einsle studies different enzymes of the nitrogen cycle and need the HPLC-MS for the detection of reaction products.
