Conceptual Uncertainty, Model Legitimacy, and Optimization of Data Acquisition Strategies (P08)

Subject Area Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Limnology, Urban Water Management, Water Chemistry, Integrated Water Resources Management
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 281741268

Catchment-wide models of reactive transport include many non-unique selections of sub-models (conceptual uncertainty). The complexity of catchments requires relatively complex models, but too complex models are not recommended: they can be fitted to almost any data set, yet have a limited predictive power. The project will investigate and quantify conceptual uncertainty within our model, test whether the model is legitimate in its complexity compared to the available data, use the model to optimize strategies for data collection, and feedback its research findings to the modeling and field strategy of the overall consortium.
