Architecture and construction of textile extensions in Maya stone buildings

Subject Area Architecture, Building and Construction History, Construction Research, Sustainable Building Technology
Term from 2017 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 333237101

Numerous pictorial and written sources as well as buildt evidence of Maya cultutral heritage indicate the original presence of light textile structures in terrace- and chamber- palaces. The project proposes to document and investigate these historical remains in de-tailed research both in the field and in archive work. This will then serve as a basis for computerized 3d-reconstructions of the originally existing light structures, which will then be analized in terms of their structural and material properties. The project intends to clarify both the aesthetic values of Maya architecture resulting from the combination of heavy, permanent and monumental stone architecture with light and ephemeral structures, as well as possible residential and other uses resulting from these textile extensions.
