Spatiotemporal control mechanisms in bacteria operate to dynamically target proteins to distinct subcellular positions, thus spatially confining their activities. These mechanisms can operate in a cell cycle-dependent or -independent manner. For instance, positioning of the division site is controlled in a cell cycle-dependent manner to ensure the generation of correctly sized daughter cells with the correct chromosome complement. By contrast, motile bacteria are polarized with distinct front-rear polarity to enable efficient translocation and this polarity can change indepen-dently of the cell cycle in response to external cues. In this project, we focus on the spatiotemporal regulation of cell division and motility in Myxococcus xanthus.
