Project Details
The sequential phases of apoptotic cell clearance by microglia and macrophages (A06)
Subject Area
Experimental Models for the Understanding of Nervous System Diseases
Term
from 2017 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 259373024
Microglia and CNS macrophages remove dead cell material in the developing, healthy and diseasedadult nervous system. While mostly viewed from the single cell angle, clearance of dead cell material(efferocytosis) in tissues is a population response of many phagocytes. To date, the criticalparameters defining the efferocytic capacity of macrophage and microglia populations are unknown. We will investigate (a) how single cell motility and cytoskeletal regulation influence this populationresponse, and (b) how metabolic pathways and organelle systems control the resolution of ingestedmaterial in phagocyte networks.
