Final Report Abstract

Court ordinances are among the main normative sources for describing a monarchic centre of power, its organizational form, staff, ceremonial and financing. The Ordinances of the Dukes of Burgundy of the 15th century constitute some of the oldest and most extensive texts of this sort. Their edition will comprehend three volumes: vol. 1 for the time of Duke Philip the Good (1419- 1467) published in 2005 and vol. 3 containing the ordinances between 1477 and 1506 in 2019. Vol. 2 with the Court Ordinances of Duke Charles the Bold (1467-1477), the subject of this project, forms the essential central part with 13 known and two reconstructed texts and is now accomplished and will be published at the beginning of 2020 and made available online shortly afterwards. The completion of this volume will finalize a substantial project that has been pursued for over twenty years. The Court Ordinances of the Dukes of Burgundy are among the most elaborate and influential texts of their genre and an eminent source for the history of a rising major European power in all respects, reflecting the complexity and splendour of a courtly society in its widely perceptible and exemplary Burgundian shaping. The publication of the Court Ordinances of Duke Charles the Bold will complement other editions, like the inventories of his letters and his charters, the accounts of the Argentier, his political manifests and the record books of the assemblies of the Order of the Golden Fleece. It will constitute another important component for historical research that will increase the knowledge about the unbelievable creative power of this prince who ruled at the beginning of the Modern Era and about his efforts over a decade to improve and centralize his court, administration and rulership.
