For several years, the B-meson production rates measured at HERA, LEP2 and Tevatron have been notoriously exceeding, by up to three standard deviations, the usual next-toleading- order (NLO) QCD predictions for massive b quarks (B-hadron anomaly). This has even triggered theoretical attempts to interpret this deviation as a signal of new physics beyond the standard model. However, it remains to be clarified if this deviation can be explained by improving and refining the QCD prediction itself. To this end, we plan to elaborate a rigorous theoretical formalism for the inclusive production of heavy-flavoured hadrons (H = D, B) in high-energy collisions. ¿ We shall then evaluate the cross sections for the relevant production processes at NLO in this scheme and perform global analyses of the available D and B data sets trying to improve the overall agreement. Using the FFs thus extracted, we shall provide reliable predictions for LHC and a future e+ e- linear collider.
